Jargon Explained

These are some of the terms you will come across in the Handbook and we thought it would be helpful to explain them.

Safeguarding
The deep commitment to ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and protection of all people, particularly children and adults who may be at risk. It is a top priority that is embedded into everything that happens in the life of the diocese, and it is the responsibility of everyone (clergy, staff, and volunteers).
Diocese of Swansea and Brecon (S&B)
The specific geographical and administrative region of the Church in Wales that the volunteer is serving, and which is committed to the mission, vision, and values described in the handbook.
Ministry Area (MA)
A term frequently used to denote the local area or grouping of churches/parishes where the volunteer performs their duties. MA employees and MA Leaders are referenced as key supervisory roles.
Dignity Charter
The framework that sets the standards of expected behaviour across all aspects of church life, committing everyone to courtesy, dignity, and respect. It is intended to create a supportive environment and explicitly mandates against bullying, harassment, and victimisation.
Code of Conduct
The outline of expected behaviour and conduct for all clergy, employees, volunteers, and contractors, especially when working with children and adults at risk. Following this Code is a core responsibility for all volunteers.
Adults at Risk
Individuals who require specific safety, wellbeing, and protection measures within the Church in Wales. Volunteers are given specific guidance for working with them, including rules on physical contact, communication, and confidentiality.
DBS Check
Stands for the Disclosure and Barring Service check, which is a background check required for roles working with children or adults at risk to ensure suitability. For volunteers, this check is free of charge.
ICT
Stands for Information and Communication Technology. Volunteers are asked to use these devices and systems in a respectful, responsible way, aligning with Church values and UK law.
Formation
Refers to the development and growth opportunities provided to volunteers alongside induction and training. This aligns with the "Valuing and developing volunteers" standard of involvement.
Laity
A term used to describe the non-ordained members of the Church.
Representative Body (RB) HR
The Human Resources (HR) team of the Church in Wales' Representative Body. They are listed as a contact and may be involved in addressing complaints or providing policy guidance (e.g., Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Policy).
Statutory Authorities
Refers to the legal, governmental, or local services, such as the emergency services (999) or the local authority social services department, who must be contacted immediately if a child or adult is in danger or at risk of harm.
