Mothers' Union marks 150 years at Brecon Cathedral Songs of Praise

The diocesan Mothers' Union gathered at Brecon Cathedral for a Songs of Praise service marking the organisation's 150th anniversary — and the presentation of a Cross of Nails.

The diocesan Mothers' Union gathered at Brecon Cathedral on Saturday for a Songs of Praise service marking the organisation's 150th anniversary. The address was given by Rev'd Mark Williams, diocesan Mothers' Union chaplain. The Province of Wales MU is marking the anniversary with a focus on peace and reconciliation through its partnership with the Community of the Cross of Nails and, during the service, diocesan president Gill Knight was presented with a Cross of Nails by Kate Massey, Canon for Arts and Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral.

Two torches made their way across the diocese in the weeks before the service, carried by Mothers' Union members in a relay connecting branches from north and south. The southern torch was blessed at Llanrhidian before passing branch to branch through the south of the diocese; a second set out from Rhayader, travelling south through the northern branches. Members were tasked with finding inventive ways to carry the flame from one branch to the next. The two torches converged on Brecon Cathedral for the service.
