Lighting the way for generations to come

Two symbolic torches are making their way across the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon this spring, carried branch to branch by members of the Mothers' Union as the organisation marks 150 years of service to families around the world.

The torches set out from the diocese's northernmost and southernmost Mothers' Union branches - Rhayader in the north and Llanrhidian in the south - and will be passed from branch to branch, spending around a week in each, before arriving at Brecon Cathedral for a celebratory Songs of Praise on 30 May.

Diocesan President Gill Knight said the relay was inspired by the organisation's 150th anniversary theme, Lighting the Way for Generations to Come.

"We all have stories about someone in the MU who helped us, practically or with advice, or maybe someone who welcomed and drew us in," she said. "So the idea of a relay seemed appropriate, and combined with the light it led to thoughts of Olympic torches."

Branches have been challenged to travel to the next stop in the most novel way they can find. "The point of this is of course just a bit of fun," Gill said. "It will be more memorable in the life of the branch and may make others ask what we're doing and why - we'd love more to join us."

The anniversary has generated considerable enthusiasm among members. Around 25 from the diocese will travel to London in June for national celebrations, including a service at St Paul's Cathedral.

"Members are enthusiastic about the anniversary and proud of the organisation," Gill said.

The milestone has also prompted reflection on why the Mothers' Union has endured. "MU is grounded in and strengthened by prayer — we support family," Gill said. "It matters as much now as when it started, as there are still families under stress, needing help with parenting, help when things go wrong."

Gill believes the organisation's longevity is rooted in its structure. "MU has probably reached 150 years as a movement because so much of it is based on grass roots action and shared values among the — now four million — members around the world."
