Dean of Brecon to retire in May

The Very Rev’d Dr Paul Shackerley has announced he will retire this spring after more than a decade as Dean of Brecon.

Paul, who has served as Dean since September 2014, will retire from ministry on 24 May 2026 on reaching the age of 70.

His final Sunday in the cathedral will be 26 April, when he will preside at the 11.00am Eucharist and at Choral Evensong later the same day. Churches across the ministry areas are invited to attend.

Announcing his retirement, he said: “You will be aware that 2026 is the year of my retirement as I reach 70 years of age. I have given notice that I will retire from ministry on 24 May.”

Reflecting on his time as Dean, he said: “I have been in the role of Dean of Brecon since September 2014. During that time we have experienced many changes and challenges, but also exciting opportunities for community and partnership engagement.”

He added: “I would like to thank all those I have had the privilege to serve with both in the Cathedral, and across the Diocese and Province. For those who have supported me and prayed for me, thank you.”

Paul said he would continue to hold the cathedral and wider church in his prayers: “Be assured of my continued commitment and prayers for the Cathedral’s ministry and mission, the Diocese and the Province of the Church in Wales.”
