Brecon Cathedral welcomes new music leadership team

Brecon Cathedral has appointed David Stevens as Director of Music and Matt McVey as Assistant Director of Music, marking a new chapter for the cathedral’s choirs, concerts and music education.

David moved to Brecon in September, having previously served in cathedral and parish posts across the UK. Matt, originally from Scotland, joined as Assistant Director of Music after roles at St Edmundsbury Cathedral and in Aberdeen.

They are already planning to strengthen and grow the cathedral’s musical life. “We're going to spend some time developing the choirs that we have here, recruiting some new singers and increasing the range of music,” David said. “And we're also going to start a couple of other choirs as well, and we're going to expand our educational offering to schools and increase hopefully the range of concerts that we offer in the Cathedral.”

Matt said Brecon already feels very familiar. “Brecon is very much like my home town. I'm from the north of Scotland, so the weather is exactly the same. And the hillside looking out over Pen y Fan and then over the road to Merthyr especially is one of my favourite drives around here.”

Chorister recruitment will be one of the new team’s key priorities. “We're on the lookout for new choristers,” David said. “So if you know a child who's interested in singing, maybe you'd like to consider them joining the cathedral choir. We offer a great educational programme for them.”

Matt also hopes to raise the profile of the cathedral organ. “It'd be nice to get out there and get the organ in a bit more of a new light,” he said. “We do have plans for concert in February, so keep an eye out for that, of music at the movies and being done by candlelight, of course.”
