Swansea Minster to host Gaia — Luke Jerram's giant Earth installation

Swansea Minster will host Gaia, a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram, from 12 to 31 October — a six-metre sphere created from detailed NASA imagery of the Earth's surface.

The installation offers visitors the experience of seeing the planet floating in three dimensions, suspended inside the Minster. Jerram's work aims to evoke the Overview Effect — a phenomenon first described by author Frank White in 1987 — in which astronauts experience a profound sense of the Earth's fragility, the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for the environment.

The Minster plans to host a programme of cultural and religious events around the installation during its three-week run. Details will be announced via the Minster's social media channels and newsletter. To be kept informed, visit SwanseaMinster.org.uk.

Gaia is on display at Swansea Minster from 12 to 31 October.
