Benjamin Britten's community opera comes to Swansea Minster

A landmark community production brings together professional opera singers, orchestral musicians and local schoolchildren for two performances at Swansea Minster on 30 June and 1 July.

After months of preparation, Swansea Minster is on the eve of one of the most ambitious community music projects the city has seen - a full staging of Noye's Fludde that brings together performers of every age and background for two performances next week.

Noye's Fludde is Benjamin Britten's retelling of the Noah story, written to be performed by a community alongside professional musicians. At Swansea Minster, local schoolchildren take the roles of the animals in the ark, performing alongside professional opera singers, students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a live orchestra. A locally built ark and professional scenery complete the spectacle.

"Preparations for Noye's Fludde have been underway for many months, and it has been a privilege to bring together so many talented people for this unique community project," said Hope Pugh, Director of Musical Engagement at Swansea Minster.

Hope has been coordinating every aspect of the production, working alongside professional opera singers, a live orchestra, students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, teachers, volunteers and lots of local schoolchildren.

"Seeing performers of all ages and experience levels come together has been incredibly inspiring, and we are excited to share Benjamin Britten's wonderful work with audiences. This production demonstrates the power of music to unite communities, nurture young talent and create something truly memorable."

Both performances take place at Swansea Minster at 6.30pm, on Monday 30 June and Tuesday 1 July. Tickets are priced at £3.96 and are available separately for 30 June and 1 July via Eventbrite.
