Schools across the diocese will gather at Brecon Cathedral on 24 February for a day exploring how the Church can champion environmental stewardship through joy.

The event, organised as part of Wales Climate Week, brings together young people, farmers and environmentalists to discuss the future of agriculture, land use and sustainable living in rural Wales. Students will lead facilitated discussions on protecting local green spaces, supporting wildlife and encouraging tree planting in their communities.

"We want to shift the narrative away from climate anxiety and towards celebrating the beauty and joy we find in creation," John Meredith, the diocese's Director of Education, said. "Young people have prophetic voices that deserve to be heard, and this event gives them space to engage meaningfully with the environmental challenges facing their communities."

The day will include keynote addresses on farming's role in carbon reduction and rural employment, workshops exploring how new technologies might help farmers adapt to climate change, and discussions about how young people can influence government climate policy.

Participating schools are sharing transport to reduce the event's environmental impact, with insights gathered from the day feeding into Wales Climate Week's broader consultation on climate action.

"Farmers manage the majority of land in Wales, so their choices directly affect food supply, nature, and local communities," John said. "This conversation brings together the people who will inherit these decisions with those who are making them now."

The event will take place from 10am to 2.15pm at Brecon Cathedral on Tuesday, 24 February.
